A Novel Route to find Judd-Ofelt Parameters in Tb-Doped Powders

The calculation of Judd-Ofelt parameters for Tb3+-doped powders from the emission spectrum is not as easy as Eu3+ case, because the transitions observed are usually 5D47FJ (J = 6, 5, 3, 2) that do not correspond to a single intensity parameter. In other words, the squared reduced matrix elements of order two, four and six are having non-zero values for all these transitions. Moreover, three out of these four transitions (5D47F5, 5D47F4 and 5D47F3) are also having a magnetic-dipole contribution which must be subtracted before any Judd-Ofelt calculation is carried out. Complicating this further, there is no pure magnetic-dipole allowed (like 5D07F1 in Eu3+) transition in the emission spectrum of trivalent terbium that can be used as a reference to calculate the refractive index of the host matrix.
